On the morning of April 9,1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General U.S. Grant in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Grant later recalled the surrender in his memoirs:
“What General Lee’s feeling were I do not know . . . but my own feelings . . . were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather then rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly and had suffered so much . . .”
