The Civil War Ends: Lee Surrenders to Grant!
      On the morning of April 9,1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General U.S. Grant in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Grant later recalled the surrender in his memoirs:

What General Lee’s feeling were I do not know . . . but my own feelings . . . were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather then rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly and had suffered so much . . .”
